The Pleasures of Paradise (part 2 of 2)

Written by

The Eternalness of the Hereafter:

The Pleasures of this world are transient whilst the joys of the hereafter are lasting and eternal.  In this life when a person enjoys something, it is only a short while before they get bored with it and proceed to search for something they feel is better, or they may not feel a need for it altogether.  As for the delights of Paradise, a person will never feel bored with anything, but rather, its goodness will increase each time they indulge in it.

Also, the life of this world is very short.  Humans only live on this earth for a short while, and very few people reach the age of seventy.

“…Say: Short is the enjoyment of this world.  The Hereafter is (far) better for him who fears God...” (Quran 4:77)

As for Paradise, people will live forever.  God says:

“...its provision is eternal and so is its shade…” (Quran 13:35)

“What is with you must vanish, and what is with God will endure …” (Quran 16:96)

“(It will be said to them): This is Our Provision, which will never finish” (Quran 38:54)

Superior Delights:

The delights of the people of Paradise, such as their clothing, food, drink, jewelry and palaces, will be far superior to their counterparts in this world.  There is in fact no room for comparison, as even the smallest space in Paradise is better than this world and all that is in it.  The Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said:

“The space of the bow of any one of you in Paradise is better than all that the sun rises upon” (Mishkaat al-Masaabeeh 3/85, no. 5615)

Free from all Impurities:

Paradise is free from all the impurities of this world.  Eating and drinking in this life results in the need for excretion and its associated unpleasant odors.  If a person drinks wine in this world, he loses his mind.  Women in this world menstruate and give birth, which are sources of pain and hurt.  Paradise is free from all of these discomforts: its people will not urinate, defecate, spit or suffer from catarrh.  The wine of Paradise, as described by its Creator, is:

“Crystal-white, delicious to those who drink (thereof), free from intoxication, nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom” (Quran 37:46-47)

The water of Paradise does not become brackish, and its milk never changes in flavor:

“...rivers of water incorruptible; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes...” (Quran 47:15)

The women of Paradise are pure and free from menstruation, postnatal bleeding and all the other impurities suffered by women in this world, and all are free from stool and feces.  God says:

“...and they shall have therein purified mates…” (Quran 2:25)

The prophet answered a person when they asked how the people of Paradise will relieve themselves:

“They relieve themselves by perspiring through their skins, and its fragrance will be that of musk, and all stomachs will have become lean.” (ibn Hibbaan)

What we have mentioned has been a mere comparison in order to understand the nature of Paradise, but as God said, its delights are truly hidden:

“No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy, as a reward for what they used to do.” (Quran 32:17)

Paradise: There is Nothing Like It:

The delights of Paradise surpass the imagination and defy description.  They are like nothing known to the people of this world; no matter how advanced we may become, what we achieve is as nothing in comparison with the joys of the Hereafter.  As is mentioned in several reports, there is nothing like Paradise:

“It is sparkling light, aromatic plants, a lofty palace, a flowing river, ripe fruit, a beautiful wife and abundant clothing, in an eternal abode of radiant joy, in beautiful soundly-constructed high houses”. (Ibn Maajah, Ibn Hibbaan)

The Sahabah asked the Prophet about the buildings of Paradise and he replied with a wonderful description:

“Bricks of gold and silver, and mortar of fragrant musk, pebbles of pearl and sapphire, and soil of saffron.  Whoever enters it is filled with joy and will never feel miserable; he will live there forever and never die; their clothes will never wear out and their youth will never fade.” (Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi, ad-Daarimee)

God says:

“And when you look there (in Paradise) you will see a delight (that cannot be imagined), and a great dominion.” (Quran 76:20)

What God has kept hidden from us the delights of Paradise is beyond our ability to comprehend.  The Prophet said that God said:

“I have prepared for My slaves what no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no human heart can imagine.”  Recite if you wish:

“No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do.” (Quran 32:17)

In another report:

“Never mind what God has told you; what He has not told you is even greater.” (Saheeh Muslim)

In other articles, we will attempt to mention some of the specific details of Paradise and the delights therein described to us by God and His last Prophet.

The Pleasures of Paradise (part 1 of 2)

Written by

The reality of Paradise is something which people will never be able to understand until they actually enter it, but God has shown us glimpses of it in the Quran.  He has described it as a place essentially different to the life of this world, both in the very nature and purpose of life, as well as the types of delights which people will enjoy therein.  The Quran tells people about Paradise, which God offers to them, describes its great blessings, and proclaims its beauties to everyone.  It informs people that Paradise is one of two ways of life prepared for them in the afterworld, and that every good thing will be theirs in Paradise to a degree that surpasses our present ability to imagine.  It also shows that Paradise is a place where all blessings have been created perfectly and where people will be offered everything their souls and hearts will desire, and that people will be far removed from want and need, anxiety or sadness, sorrow and regret.  Every kind of beauty and blessing exists in Paradise and will be revealed with a perfection never seen or known before.  God has prepared such blessings there as a gift, and these will be offered only to people with whom He is pleased.

But what is the nature of these delights in Paradise, and how will it be different from the delights of this world?  We will try to highlight a few of these differences.

Pure delight without pain and suffering:

While people in this world experience some delight, they also face much toil and suffering.  If one was to scrutinize the life which they live, they will find that the amount of hardship they face is much more than the ease and comfort.  As for the life of the Hereafter, there will be no hardship nor suffering in it, and people will live therein in pure joy and delight.  All the causes of sorrow, pain and suffering which people experience in this life will be absent in the Hereafter.  Let’s take a look at some of these causes.

Wealth:

When one thinks of success in this life, they usually conjure the image of big houses, fine jewelry and clothing, and expensive cars; financial stability is seen to be the key to a happy life.  To most people, success is inseparably related to wealth, even though this is the furthest from the truth.  How many times have we seen the wealthiest of people living such miserable lives, that it sometimes even leads them to commit suicide!  Wealth is something which humans in their very nature desire at any cost, and this desire has been created for a great and wise purpose.  When this desire is not satiated, it causes some extent of grief in a person.  For this reason, God has promised the inhabitants of Paradise that they will have all that they imagined as far as wealth and belongings are concerned, both for those who were extremely poor, experiencing even hunger and thirst, to those well-to-do but who desired even more.  God gives us a glimpse of this when he says:

“… They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold, and they will wear green garments of fine silk and heavy brocade.  They will recline therein on raised thrones.  How good [is] the recompense!  How beautiful a couch [is there] to recline on!” (Quran 18:31)

“Eat and drink at ease for that which you have sent forth (good deeds) in days past!” (Quran 69:24)
“... there will be there all that the souls could desire, all that the eyes could delight in …
” (Quran 43:71)

Disease and Death:

Another cause of pain and suffering in this life is the death of a loved one or disease, which are both non-existent in Paradise.  None will feel any sickness or pain in Paradise.  The Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said about the people of Paradise:

“They will never fall ill, blow their noses or spit.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)

None will die in Paradise.  All shall live eternally enjoying the pleasures therein.  The Prophet Muhammad said that a caller will call out in Paradise when people enter it:

“Indeed may you be healthy and never be sick again, may you live and never die again, may you be young and never grow feeble again, may you enjoy, and never feel sorrow and regret again.” (Saheeh Muslim)

Social relationships:

As for the remorse felt due to a rift in personal relationships, people will never hear any evil or hurting comments or speech in Paradise.  They will only hear good words and words of peace.  God says:

“They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin.  But only the saying of: Peace! Peace!” (Quran 56:25-26)

There will be no enmity between people nor ill-feelings:

“And We shall remove from their breasts any (mutual) hatred or sense of injury (which they had, if at all, in the life of this world)…” (Quran 7:43)

The Prophet said:

“There will be no hatred or resentment among them, their hearts will be as one, and they will glorify God, morning and evening.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)

People will have the best of companions in the Hereafter, who were also the best people in the world:

“And whoever obeys God and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom God has bestowed favor – of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous.  And excellent are those as companions!” (Quran 4:69)

The hearts of the people of Paradise will be pure, their speech will be good, their deeds righteous.  There will be no hurtful, upsetting, offensive or provocative talk there, for Paradise is free of all worthless words and deeds. If we were to discuss all the causes for anguish in this life, we would surely find its absence or opposite to be true in Paradise.

status of woman In Islam

Written by

In Islam , woman reached a high status which has not been reached within any other religion before Islam , and which will not be reached in a following nation .  when Islam honoured man , it regarded men and women equally . concerning rules of Islam , people are all being treated the same way in this life , as they will be rewarded equally in the hereafter .

Allah says "  And we have certainly honoured the children of Adam " Al Israa 70

Allah also says " There is a share for men and a share for women from what is left by parents and those nearest related " Al Nisaa 7

besides he says " And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses, etc.) similar (to those of their husbands) " Al baqarah .

Moreover he -  glory be to him - says " The believers, men and women, areAuliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another " Al tawbah 71

Allah says also "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small." Al Israa 23,24

Also says " So their Lord accepted of them (their supplication and answered them), "Never will I allow to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female " Al Imraan 195 .

" Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contenainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter) " Al Nahl 97

" And whoever does righteous good deeds, male or female, and is a true believer in the Oneness of Allah (Muslim), such will enter Paradise and not the least injustice, even to the size of a Naqira (speck on the back of a date-stone), will be done to them " Al-Nisaa 124

such honour gained by Muslim woman is considered a unique honour  that can't be found in any other religion or law , as in the roman civilization which agreed to consider woman as a slave , subordinate to men , and has no rights at all . a big conference has been held in Rome which research women affairs and reached that woman is a soulless being so she will not have the pleasure of the hereafter , and woman is considered filth .

In Athene  women considered a piece of furniture , the used to be sold and bought , they also are considered filth and a result of devils'  deed .

Old Indian legislations decided that , epidemic , death , hell , snake poison  , and fire , all that are considered better than woman , they also decided that woman's right of life ends when her husband's life ends , so she was to throw herself with her husband's dead body while being burned , otherwise she will bear curse until the end of her life .

As for woman in Judaism , she was regarded in the old testament as the following : "  I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness , I find more bitter than death ,  the woman who is a snare , whose heart is a trap ,    and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her,    but the sinner she will ensnare "  Ecclesiastes 7:25, 26
It is known that the old testament is believed and sanctified by both jaws and Christians
As for woman's status in the middle ,  and modern ages it is clarified by the following facts

The Danish writer wieth kordsten explained the trend of the catholic church towards woman saying ( within the middle ages , there was a so limited care of European woman due to the trend of the catholic doctrine that considered woman a second-rank creature )

A conference has been held in France in 586 AD discussing woman's status and whether she is considered a human or not ? and after discussion the members of this conference decided that she is a human but she was created as a servant for man .

The seventeenth article of the French stated " a married woman - even though this marriage based on the system that separates from what she own and what her husband own – is not allowed to gift anything , transfer  property , mortgage property , possess anything with or without exchange , without a written agreement from her husband or being a partner in the contract "

In England , Henry VIII prohibited English woman from the recitation of the Bible , women still not considered as civilians till 1850 AD , they still with no personal rights till 1822 AD  ( series of religions Comparison by Ahmed Shalaby vol 3 pp 210-213 )

AS FOR  modern woman in America , Europe  and other Industrial countries  , she is considered a tacky creature consumed in commercial purposes , she is a part of the advertising campaigns , to the extent of stripping her clothes to be use  as a model on which merchandise is displayed in the shop windows , her body and attaining such body is permitted due to laws enacted by men to make her a thing satisfying  their desires everywhere .

She gains care as long as she can give in exchange , from her hands , intellect , or body ; but when she got older and lost the ability to give she finds her society – with all its  individuals , and constitutions -  do without her ,  and live alone at her home or in the psychiatric clinics .

Compare that  with what was mentioned in the holly Quran

" The believers, men and women, are Auliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another " Al Taubah 71

When Allah honoured  woman , he demonstrated  to  humanity that he created her to be a mother , a wife  , a daughter , and a sister , and he made special laws for woman only and do not include man .

Giving Sincere Advice

Written by

The giving of sincere advice enjoys a sublime and exalted position in Islam, and how could this not be so? The Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) considered the giving of sincere advice on a par with the religion as whole. The Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Religion is giving sincere advice.”

A person would give sincere advice to others when he loves and sympathizes with them, when he wishes goodness for them, and when he wishes to thwart evil and harm from them. Thus, Ibn Al-Atheer may Allaah have mercy upon him said that giving sincere advice is an indication of the advisor's wish to bring about goodness for the one advised.

The Companions may Allaah be pleased with them gave an oath of allegiance to the Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) that they would sincerely advise the Muslims: Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah may Allaah be pleased with him said, “I gave the oath of allegiance to the Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) that I would perform prayers, pay the Zakaah, and give advice to every Muslim.”

In fact, a person who sincerely advises people, seeking goodness for them, is one of the vicegerents of Allaah The Almighty upon the earth. Al-Hasan may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “There still exist persons who give sincere advice for the sake of Allaah The Almighty. They sincerely advise people for the sake of Allaah and educate them as to what is due to Him. They implement the order of Allaah The Almighty upon the earth by giving sincere advice - and these are the vicegerents of Allaah upon the earth.”

To Whom Should Sincere Advice be Given?

Sincere advice is for Allaah, His Messenger, His Book, and to the Muslim leaders and the public at large. Imaam ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him said,

Sincere advice for Allaah The Almighty means describing Him with the appropriate attributes, submitting to Him overtly and covertly, seeking His pleasure through obeying Him, fearing His anger by not disobeying Him, and striving to help sinners return to Him.

Sincere advice for His Book means learning and teaching it, reciting and writing its letters properly, understanding its meanings, observing its boundaries, applying its instructions and rebutting the allegations that fabricators try to raise against it.

Sincere advice for His Messenger ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) means venerating him, supporting him during his life and after his death, reviving his Sunnah by learning and teaching it, following his example in sayings and actions, and loving him and his followers.

Sincere advice to the Muslim leaders means assisting them in the tasks with which they are assigned, alerting them when they are heedless, covering their unintentional mistakes, uniting people upon their obedience, and guiding straying hearts back to them. The greatest sincere advice that a person may give to them is to prevent them - in the best way possible - from oppression.

The Imaams of Ijtihaad [those who issue rulings] are among the Muslim leaders, and sincere advice to them means disseminating their knowledge and merits and thinking good of them.

Sincere advice to the Muslim masses means having compassion for them, seeking what benefits them, teaching them what is useful for them, preventing harm from them, loving for them what a person would love for himself, and hating for them what a person would hate for himself.

Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Naasir As-Sa‘di may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “Sincere advice for Allaah and His Messenger implies true belief in them, sincerity in making Jihaad, determination to perform it when one can do so, and trying one's best to encourage and urge Muslims to do so. Sincere advice begins with sincerely advising oneself first, for rarely will a person advise others sincerely if he cheats himself.”

The Messengers were the Most Concerned of all with Sincerely Advising Their People

The Prophets of Allaah, may Allaah exalt their mention, endeavored to call people to Allaah. They were extremely keen on guiding them and spared no effort in giving them sincere advice. For instance, Prophet Nooh (Noah) may Allaah exalt his mention said to his people (what means): {But [I] am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds. I convey to you the messages of my Lord and advise you...} [Quran 7:61-62] The messengers who succeeded Nooh may Allaah exalt his mention followed his way in giving sincere advice. Prophet Hoode (Hud) may Allaah exalt his mention said to his people (what means): {I am to you a trustworthy adviser.} [Quran 7:68] Prophet Saalih may Allaah exalt his mention said (what means): {I advised you, but you do not like advisors.} [Quran 7:79] Prophet Shu‘ayb may Allaah exalt his mention said (what means): {O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you.} [Quran 7:93]

Also, the Companions of Prophet Muhammad ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) confirmed that he conveyed the message of Allaah The Exalted and sincerely advised his people. It was narrated on the authority of Jaabir may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said to his Companions: “You will be questioned about me [in the Hereafter]; what are you going to say?” They replied, “We will testify that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled it and have given sincere advice.”

Giving Sincere Advice is a Due Right upon a Muslim from His Brother

The Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) considered the giving of sincere advice as one of the greatest rights that are due upon Muslims; he ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “There are six rights due upon a Muslim from his Muslim brother…” one of which was: “ … giving him sincere advice if he asks for it.” The Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said: “If any of you consults his [Muslim] brother, he [the latter] should sincerely advise him.”

Allaah The Almighty has doubled the reward of the sincere advisor who gives his advice hoping for the wellbeing of other Muslims. It was narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “If a slave sincerely advises his master and worships Allaah properly, he will have his reward doubled.” Moreover, he will be one of the first people to enter Paradise. He ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said: “I have been shown the three types of people who will enter Paradise first: A martyr; a chaste person who sought chastity; and a slave who worshipped Allaah properly and gave sincere advice to his masters.”

Etiquettes of Sincerely Giving Advice

Advice has a sublime position in Islam. A beneficial sincere advice is the one in which the advisor abides by the etiquettes of the Sharee‘ah that the scholars have mentioned. Among those etiquettes are:

1- The advisor should give his advice sincerely for the sake of Allaah The Almighty, without seeking ostentation, fame, worldly gain or showing superiority.
2- The advisor should have enough knowledge about the advice which he is giving. This is because advising is a form of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil. If a person does not have enough knowledge about what he is advising about, he may forbid the good, thinking that he is forbidding an evil, and vice versa.
3- He should give it privately. Giving advice publicly is a reproach and rebuke that is disliked. Mis‘ar ibn Kidaam may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “May Allaah have mercy upon a person who presented my faults to me in secret, for giving advice in public is a rebuke.”
4- Gentleness in giving advice and avoiding excess and rebuke. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Gentleness does not enter anything except that it adorns it.”

On his part, the one being advised should listen to the advice, apply the good that it contains and rid himself of the evil desires of the self. The righteous predecessors would consider advice a gift that the advisor had presented them. ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him said, “May Allaah have mercy upon a person who gifted me my faults!” Also the advisee should not let harshness of the advisor deprive him of benefiting from the advice.

We ask Allaah The Almighty to make us all from those who listen to speech and follow the best of it.

The Benefits of Converting to Islam (part 3 of 3)

Written by

The benefits of converting to Islam are too numerous to count, however we have chosen just a few that stand out above the rest.

8.  Converting to Islam answers all life’s BIG questions.

One of the major benefits of converting to Islam is that it lifts the fog.  Suddenly life, and all its ups and downs becomes clearer, it all makes more sense.  The answers to the big questions that have been plaguing humankind for millennia are all laid bare.  At any time during our lives, when we stand on the precipice, or at the fork in the road we ask ourselves – “Is this it, is this really all there is?”  Well no, this is not all there is.   Islam answers the questions and asks us to look beyond materialism and see that this life is little more than a transient stop on the way to life everlasting.  Islam gives a clear aim and purpose to life.  As a Muslim we are able to find answers in the words of God, the Quran, and in the example of His final messenger Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him.

Being Muslim indicates complete submission to the Creator and the fact that we were only created to worship God Alone.  That is the reason we are here, on this spinning planet in the seemingly infinite universe; to worship God and God Alone.   Converting to Islam frees us from the only potentially unforgiveable sin, which is to associate partners with God.

“And I (God) created not the jinn and humankind, except to worship Me (Alone).” (Quran 51:56)

“Oh humankind, worship God, you have no other god but Him.” (Quran 7:59)

It must be said however, that God is not in need of human worship.   If not a single human worshipped God, it would not diminish His glory in any way, and if all of humankind worshipped Him, it would not increase His glory in any way.[1] We, humankind, need the comfort and security of worshipping God.

9.  Converting to Islam allows every aspect of life to be an act of worship.

The religion of Islam was revealed for the benefit of all humankind who will exist until the Day of Judgement.  It is a complete way of life, not something only practiced on the weekend or at annual festivals.  A believer’s relationship with God is twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.  It does not stop and start.  Through His infinite mercy, God has provided us with a holistic approach to life, one that covers all aspects, spiritual, emotional and physical.  He has not left us alone to stumble in the darkness rather God has given us the Quran, a book of guidance.  He has also given us the authentic traditions of Prophet Muhammad that explain and expand on the guidance of the Quran.

Islam fulfils and balances our physical and spiritual needs.  This system, designed by the Creator for his creation, not only expects a high standard of behaviour, morality and ethics but it also allows each and every human act to be transformed into worship.  In fact, God commands the believers to dedicate their lives to Him.

“Say: ‘Surely my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for God, the Lord of all the worlds.’” (Quran 6:162)

10.  Converting to Islam makes all relationships harmonious.

God knows what is best for His creation.   He has complete knowledge of the human psyche.  Consequently Islam clearly defines the rights and responsibilities we have towards God, our parents, spouses, children, relatives, neighbours, etc.  This brings order out of chaos, harmony out of confusion and replaces friction and conflict with peace.  Converting to Islam allows one to face any and all situations with confidence. Islam is able to guide us through all aspects of life, spiritual, political, familial, societal and corporate.

When we fulfil our obligation to honour and obey God we automatically acquire all the manners and high standards of morality that Islam demands.  Converting to Islam means submitting to the will of God and this entails honouring and respecting the rights of humankind, all living creatures and even the environment.  We must know God and submit to Him in order to make decisions that will earn His pleasure.

In conclusion, there is one benefit of converting to Islam that makes every day a delight. No matter what circumstances a Muslim finds him or herself in, they are secure in the knowledge that nothing in this universe happens without the permission of God.  The tests, trials and triumphs are all good and if faced with complete trust in God, they will lead to a happy conclusion and real contentment.  Prophet Muhammad said, “Indeed amazing are the affairs of a believer!  They are all for his benefit.   If he is granted ease then he is thankful, and this is good for him.   And if he is afflicted with a hardship, he perseveres, and this is good for him”.[2]

The Benefits of Converting to Islam (part 2 of 3)

Written by

Many people around the globe spend countless hours reading and studying the principles of Islam; they pour over translations of the meanings of the Quran and are held entranced by the life and times of Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him.  Many need only a glimpse of Islam and convert immediately.  Still others recognise the truth but wait, and wait and keep on waiting, sometimes to the point of putting their hereafter in peril.  Therefore today we continue our discussion on, the sometimes not so obvious benefits of converting to Islam.

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.” (Quran 3:85)

5.  Converting to Islam is the first step in establishing a lifelong connection to the Creator.

Every single member of the human race is born innately knowing that God is One.   Prophet Muhammad said that every child was born in a state of fitrah[1], with the correct understanding of God.[2] According to Islam this is a natural state of being, instinctively knowing there is a Creator and naturally wanting to worship and please Him.  However those who do not know God or establish a relationship with Him may find the human existence puzzling and sometimes even distressing.  For many, allowing God into their lives and worshipping Him in a way that is pleasing to Him, gives a whole new meaning to life.

“Verily, in the remembrance of God do hearts find rest.” (Quran 13:28)

Through acts of worship such as prayer and supplication, one begins to feel that God is close at hand, through His infinite knowledge and wisdom.  A believer is secure in the knowledge that God, the Most High, is above the heavens, and comforted by the fact that He is with them in all their affairs.  A Muslim is never alone.

“He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, what descends from the heaven and what ascends thereto.   And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be.   And God is the All-Seer of what you do.” (Quran 57:4)

6.  Converting to Islam reveals God’s mercy and forgiveness towards His creation.

As feeble human beings we often feel lost and alone.  It is then that we turn to God and seek His Mercy and Forgiveness.  When we turn to Him in true submission His tranquillity descends upon us.  We are then able to feel the quality of His mercy and see it manifest in the world around us.  However in order to worship God, we need to know Him.  Converting to Islam opens the gateway to this knowledge, including the fact that God’s forgiveness knows no bounds.

Many people are confused or ashamed of the many sins they have committed over the course of their lives.  Converting to Islam completely washes those sins away; it is as if they never happened.  A new Muslim is as pure as a new born baby.

“Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.” (Quran 8:38)

If after converting to Islam a person commits more sins the door to forgiveness is still wide open.

“O you who believe!  Turn to God with sincere repentance!  It may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise)…” (Quran 66:8)

7.  Converting to Islam teaches us that trials and tests are part of the human condition.

Once a person converts to Islam he begins to understand that the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of this life are not random acts of a cruel and unorganised universe.  A true believer understands that our existence is part of a well-ordered world, and life is unfolding in exactly the way God, in His infinite wisdom, has ordained.

God tells us we will be tested and He advises us to bear our trials and tribulations patiently.  This is difficult to understand unless one embraces the Oneness of God, the religion of Islam, where God has given us clear guidelines about how to behave when faced with trials and tribulations.   If we follow these guidelines, found in the Quran and the authentic traditions of Prophet Muhammad, it is possible to bear afflictions with ease and even be grateful.

“And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient ones.” (Quran 2:155)

Prophet Muhammad said, “A man will be tested according to the level of his religious commitment, and the trials will keep affecting a believer until he is left walking on the face of the earth with no burden of sin whatsoever”.[3] A Muslim knows with certainty that this world, this life, is no more than a transient place, a stop on the journey to our eternal life in either the hell fire or the paradise.  To face the Creator with no burden of sin is a marvellous thing, certainly worth the tests that befall us.

In the next article we will conclude this discussion by mentioning that Islam is a way of life.  It clearly defines the rights, obligations and responsibilities we have towards other human beings, and our care towards animals and the environment.  Islam contains the answers to all of life’s questions both big and small.

The Benefits of Converting to Islam (part 1 of 3)

Written by

Many articles on this web explain how easy it is to convert to Islam. There are also articles and videos that discuss the obstacles that can prevent one from accepting Islam. Real converts tell their stories, and we can share their elation and excitement. There is even an article that explains exactly how to become Muslim. Converting to Islam is covered from many different angles and this series of articles discuss the benefits that come from converting to Islam.

Many advantages are gained by converting to Islam, the most obvious one being the sense of calmness and well being that descends upon any person who realises they have discovered one of life’s most basic truths. Establishing a relationship with God in the most pure and simple way is liberating and exhilarating, and it results in serenity. However it is not the only advantage of converting to Islam, there are other benefits that one would experience and we will discuss them here one by one.

1. Converting to Islam liberates a person from slavery to manmade systems and lifestyles.

Islam emancipates the mind from superstitions and uncertainties; it liberates the soul from sin and corruption and frees the conscience from oppression and fear. Submission to the will of God, does not curtail freedom, on the contrary it gives a very high degree of freedom by freeing the mind from superstitions and filling it with truth and knowledge.

Once a person accepts Islam they are no longer slaves to fashion, or consumerism,  and they are free from the slavery of  a monetary system designed to subjugate the people. On a smaller but equally as important scale Islam liberates a person from the superstitions that rule the lives of those not truly submitted to God. A believer knows that good and bad luck do not exist. Both the good and the bad aspects of our lives come from God and as Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him, explains all the affairs of a believer are good, “If he is granted ease then he is thankful, and this is good for him. And if he is afflicted with a hardship, he perseveres, and this is good for him”.[1]

After a person is freed from manmade systems and lifestyles he or she is free to worship God in the correct manner. A believer is able to put his trust and hope in God and sincerely seek His mercy.

2. Converting to Islam allows a person to truly experience God’s love.

Converting to Islam allows a person to achieve God’s love by following His guide to life - the Quran, and the authentic teachings and traditions of Prophet Muhammad. When God created the world He did not abandon it to instability and insecurity. He sent a rope, firm and steady, and by holding tightly to this rope an insignificant human being can achieve greatness and eternal peace.    In the words of Quran, God makes His desires perfectly clear, however human beings have free will and are free to either please or displease God.

Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "If you (really) love God then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah), God will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Quran 3:33)

And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers. (Quran 3:85)

There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Taghut[2] and believes in God, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And God is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (Quran 2:256)

3. A benefit of converting to Islam is that God promises Paradise to the believer.

Paradise, as described in many verses of Quran, is a place of eternal bliss and it is promised to believers. God shows his mercy to the believers by rewarding them with Paradise. Whoever denies God or worships something with, or instead of Him, or claims that God has a son or daughter or partner, will be doomed in the Hereafter to the hellfire.  Converting to Islam will save a person from the torment of the grave, suffering on the Day of Judgement and eternal hellfire.

“And those who believe (in the Oneness of God) and do righteous good deeds, to them We shall surely give lofty dwellings in Paradise, underneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever. Excellent is the reward of the workers.” (Quran 29: 58)

4. Happiness, tranquillity and inner peace and can be achieved by converting to Islam.

Islam itself is inherently associated with inner peace and tranquillity. The words Islam, Muslim and salaam (peace) all come from the root word “Sa - la – ma” denoting peace, security, and safety.  When one submits to the will of God he or she will experience an innate sense of security and peacefulness.

Perfect happiness exists only in Paradise.  There we will find total peace, tranquillity and security and be free from the fear, anxiety and pain that are part of the human condition.  However the guidelines provided by Islam allow us, imperfect humans, to seek happiness in this world.  The key to being happy in this world and the next is seeking the pleasure of God, and worshipping Him, without associating partners with Him.

In the next article we continue our discussion about the benefits of converting to Islam by mentioning forgiveness and mercy, and trials and tribulations.

Arrogance and Tyranny will not Remain Unpunished

Written by

The Quran is a book of guidance.  It is a road map to success and eternal happiness, a gift from the Creator to the creation.  It is a book full of signs; God calls them evidences, proofs and lessons.  They prove the existence of God and warn humankind of a Day of Judgement, when each one of us will stand before God weighed down, or held high, by our deeds.

One of the most manifest signs is the story of Moses. It is a story that holds many lessons for humankind. One part of the story in particular that has intrigued people for centuries is the parting of the Red Sea and the drowning of the Egyptians.  All three major monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam tell relatively the same Moses story, however the Quran is able to fill in details and correct misinterpretations.  While all versions include the parting of the Red Sea and the drowning of Pharaoh, Quran tells us that Pharaoh’s body will be preserved for all time, as a sign.

“So this day We shall deliver your (dead) body (out from the sea) that you may be a sign to those who come after you! And verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our signs.” (Quran 10:92)

When Pharaoh had power, wealth, good health and strength he refused to acknowledge God.  He denied the signs and condemned himself.  At the last minute, as the waves crashed over him and his heart constricted in fear, Pharaoh acknowledged God.  Pharaoh’s arrogance fell away, but alas it was too late, he saw death approaching and cried out to God with fear and horror.  The renowned Islamic scholar Ibn Kathir describes Pharaoh’s death.

“The curtain fell on Pharaoh’s tyranny, and the waves threw his corpse up to the western seashore.  The Egyptians saw him and knew that the god whom they worshipped and obeyed was a mere man who could not keep death away from his own neck.”

God calls it a sign for those “who come after”.

Many of the Pharaoh’s of Egypt behaved as if they were gods.  If a Pharaoh reigned for thirty years there was a ceremony called a Sed festival where the king was officially turned into a god.  Many Pharaoh’s especially those who reigned during what is known as the Second Kingdom built numerous monuments and statues to themselves. Some, particularly Amenhotep III and Ramses II wanted to leave a mark, a reminder of their great strength, wealth and divinity.

(God said to Moses), “Go to Pharaoh; verily he has transgressed all bounds (he is arrogant and too proud and has refused to believe in God).  And say to him: “Would you purify yourself (from the sin of disbelief by becoming a believer)?” (Quran 79: 17 & 18)

Then he (Pharaoh) gathered his people and cried aloud, “I am your lord, most high.  “So God seized him with punishment for his last and first transgression.  Verily, in this is an instructive admonition for whosoever fears Allah. (Quran 79: 24 & 25)

Pharaoh said: “O chiefs! I know not that you have a god other than me.  So kindle for me (a fire), O Haman, to bake (bricks out of) clay, and set up for me a lofty tower in order that I may look at (or look for) the God of Moses...” (Quran 28:38)

The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt were known for their excesses, their beliefs in multiple gods and at times their cruelty and oppression of slaves, and ordinary citizens.  When a human being believes himself to be a god, he is arrogant and tyrannical, yet as in this case of the Pharaoh of Moses (whoever he may, or may not have been) who was at the height of his arrogance, God was still willing to forgive him.  He sent sign after sign and proof after proof of His existence, but Pharaoh chose to live as if there was no tomorrow.  Pharaoh chose to reject the offer of forgiveness and for him and those like him, there is always a tomorrow and inevitably a judgement.

Go you and your brother with My signs and do not, you both, slacken and become weak in My Remembrance.  Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, verily he has transgressed (all bounds in disbelief and disobedience and behaved as an arrogant and as a tyrant).  And speak to him mildly, perhaps he may accept admonition or fear (God). (Quran 20: 43&44)

The signs sent by God to Pharaoh were meant to be a reminder, but he rejected those signs out of his arrogance and became one of the losers.

We are able to look at the preserved body of a Pharaoh, any pharaoh, and be reminded of God’s words.  We can also look at the behaviour of people today, who behave as if they were 21st century pharaohs and remember how God punished the pharaohs of the past.  The end result of Pharaoh is a reminder for all of humankind.

It reminds us that those who knowingly choose not to worship God in the manner He rightly deserves, risk never being guided to the right path.  How many signs will God send?  One, one million? Is it worth giving up eternal bliss for moments of happiness based on arrogance and ego?

The Common Origin of Humanity

Written by

“O mankind!  Be conscious of your Lord, who has created you from one soul (Adam), and out of it created its mate (Eve), and out of the two spread many men and women.  And remain conscious of God, in whose name you demand [your rights] from one another, and of these ties of kinship.  Verily, God is ever watchful over you!” (Quran 4:1)

God addresses entire humanity and asks them to be conscious of Him, to be aware of His presence.  God reminds people of a forgotten reality: their earthly origins.  All human beings have One God, their Creator, one father – Adam – and one mother, Eve.  The plight of modernity could begin to heal if human beings remember their origins.

Human beings did not appear on this earth by their own will. Rather, someone else willed that human beings inhabit earth. Someone else willed their existence and prepared the earth and sun in perfect balance to make life possible.  If people were to recall this simple fact, they would proceed in the right direction.  The One who willed human existence has perfect knowledge of humanity and their strengths and their weaknesses. If humans recognized this, they would obey the One they owe their existence to.

Just like human beings have come into existence by the will of the One, human beings also trace back to the same parents.  If people were to realize this, racism, ethnic superiority, and exploitation would end.  Siblings would stop fighting and taking each other’s life.  Siblings would realize their common Creator and be conscious of Him, and give their “kin” their due rights.  Human beings would not divide themselves into casts and classes.  Human beings would not let race, skin color, or national origin determine superiority.

If human beings were to realize that another soul was created from the original single soul to be its mate and to spread both men and women throughout the world, they would respect women more.  Women would not have to go through centuries of oppression, and their humanity would not have been denied for centuries.  Unfortunately, when human beings tried to correct one wrong, they fell into another one.  They forgot that a soul was created for a soul, that a woman makes a man complete.  Men and women are not engaged in an eternal battle of genders; rather, they have been created to complement and complete each other.

God lays out the social fabric of human society, which lies in the family.  God could have created multiple families instead of Adam and Eve in the beginning, but He chose to create Adam and Eve, and spread humanity from their seed.  Islamic ethics considers the family to be the natural basis and cornerstone of a moral society.  A family consists of a human couple and their (legal) children where both the man and woman have each essential roles to play in keeping the family happy and intact.

In the latter portion of the verse is a reminder to be conscious of God, to do what is right and to stay away from wrongdoing in whose Name people take oaths, swear allegiances, and ask favors.

Lastly, the verse ends with a reminder that God is ever watchful over everything, big or small; nothing escapes His knowledge and sight.  The knowledge that God is watching helps one be conscious of Him.

An example of how a great leader dealt with those who showed him enmity.

There was a small community in an isolated area. Weak and defenseless, the people of this community lived in fear and anxiety, because they were being relentlessly attacked by a gang of bandits.

We can scarcely imagine their fear. It is the fear of a helpless person in the face of a strong and merciless abuser. These bandits knew only the law of the jungle. Like lions, they recognized no code of ethics besides their own hunger and lust. Anyone they could subdue was fair game.

Though the community lived in the desert, before the arrival of the gang, they enjoyed peace and security and managed to prosper. Now they were being stripped of their lives, their liberty, and their honor. In desperation, they appealed to the authorities to come save them.

The head of state decided to take it upon himself to lead his forces into the area and punish the ones who were spreading terror and violating the lives and security of his people. News of this mobilization spread quickly and soon the bandits knew that the authorities were coming after them in force. They were compelled to flee the area and seek refuge in the surrounding mountains. They hid among the highest peaks they could find, hoping to save themselves. They knew that they could very well meet their fate in the very place they were fleeing to, but they hoped to at least be able to scope out the forces that were being sent against them.

The forces arrived under the command of the head of state to find that the bandits had abandoned the area and taken up positions on a nearby mountain to survey the situation from a safe vantage point.

As soon as the forces arrived, a thunderstorm struck, flooding the valleys near the mountain. The head of state was soaked through. After the storm passed, he went off to find a place to remove his clothes and allow them to air out. He found a tree, took off his outer garments, and hung them on a branch to dry. He sat beneath the tree to rest from the tiring journey. Fatigue defeated him and he soon drifted off to sleep.

One of the bandits was watching this with interest, and said to himself: “This is an excellent opportunity to subdue the leader while he is sleeping. Then no one will stand in our way.”

Exercising the utmost stealth, he climbed down from the mountain and snuck across to where the leader was sleeping.

As he approached the tree, he noticed the leader’s sword beside him. He looked left and right to make sure that no one else was around. Then, with his skill as a thief, he quickly snatched up the sword and then pointed it in the leaders face.

The bandit sneered and exclaimed: “Who will save you from me now?”

The leader woke up at these words to see the bandit standing, threateningly above his head, sword in hand. He realized immediately that the glowering bandit had disarmed him and was threatening to kill him. Imagine what you would do in such a situation.

The leader kept his composure, straightened himself up where he was sitting, and regarded his assailant calmly. After listening patiently to the bandit’s threats, he answered his assailant’s question, and said: “God will save me.”

The bandit felt a shudder go through his body and down his arm. He dropped the sword. As swiftly as it fell, the leader snatched it up and came upon the bandit with it, repeating the same question that the bandit had asked him moments before: “Who will save you from me now?”

Imagine that you found yourself in this leader’s position. What would you do with the bandit? Would your state of mind give you any chance to think before acting? Would anyone blame you if you struck the thief down in self defense?

However, this leader had a strong, magnanimous heart, a heart that knew neither rancor nor vengefulness. He regarded vindictiveness to be a sign of weakness. Imagine that the leader not only pardoned the bandit, but offered him the opportunity to join with his forces in their campaign. Moreover, he promised him that if he took the offer, he would receive all of the entitlements and rewards that the other soldiers would get.

We would suspect the bandit to eagerly take up this offer, at least as an act of deception. However, the bandit did the unthinkable. He refused, and the ruffian did so with all the coarseness and impertinence that he could muster.

The leader said to him: “Then go. You know the way.”

The bandit began to hasten away, but then stopped and said: “I will not fight against you, nor will I ever join with any group who fights you.” This, in and of itself, was an acceptable enough outcome.

When the bandit returned to the rest of his gang, they could see that he was elated to have survived the encounter. He said to them: “I have come to you from a leader like no other.” He then related to them everything that had happened and how fortunate he was to still be alive.”

It remains for us to reveal the identity of this leader. He was the same person who is often maligned and depicted in a most ignoble light.

Yes, he was none other than Muhammad, the Prophet of God.
